Pudsey clubs together with
golfers to help needy children
He may not be the world’s finest golfer but
Pudsey Bear ended up the real winner when he
took to the fairways in Coventry to help raise
money for Children in Need.
The BBC’s popular mascot joined teams of
businessmen and women at the Windmill Village
Hotel & Golf Club for the annual charity golf
day hosted by Birmingham recruitment specialists
Work With Us Ltd.
Golfers, including Gary Alliss – head
teaching pro at The Belfry – enjoyed the
mid-autumn sunshine and an only slightly chill
wind to battle for top honours.
Suzanne Smith, organiser and managing
director of Work With Us Ltd, said: “It was an
absolutely fantastic day and everyone enjoyed
the golf while raising money for a fantastic
cause.
“We had twice as many teams this year as last
and I think we have easily matched and possibly
beaten the £2000 total we raised last year.”
Suzanne has been taking golf lessons with
Gary Alliss since February and the son of
legendary golf commentator Peter Alliss was only
too happy to get involved with the golf day for
the second year in a row.
“It is obviously a very worthy cause and what
Suzanne has achieved is remarkable; I can see
this annual event going from strength to
strength.”
Many of the competing teams would have had
one eye on one of the fabulous hole-in-one
prizes on offer. An ace at the par three second
hole, for example would have netted them a brand
new BMW donated by Sytner in Birmingham, car
while other prizes for holes-in-one included an
all expenses-paid trip to Portugal, golf at The
Belfry and a brand new set of clubs.
“Sadly no one managed to hole out with their
tee shots but a few came close,” added Suzanne.
“It did nothing to detract from everyone
enjoying the day and the presentation dinner in
the evening.”
In a close-fought battle the Johnston Park
McAndrew team, led by David Johnston claimed the
top prize for their efforts on the course coming
home with 82 points and winning a fine silver
salver. Second place went to the Work With Us
team led by captain Peter Smith with a total of
81 points while Barclays Wolverhampton finished
third with 79 points.
During the black tie dinner afterwards a
further £560 was raised through a charity raffle
which will be matched by Barclays Bank as part
of their community fund raising initiative.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Company on course to help
Children in Need Pudsey Bear will
take to the tee in Coventry this week to help
raise money for Children in Need. The iconic
mascot of the BBC charity will join local
businessmen and women at the Windmill Village
Hotel & Golf Club where Suzanne Smith, managing
director of recruitment specialists Work With Us
Ltd, is hosting her annual golf day.
Last year Work With Us raised more than £2,000
and this time round Suzanne hopes to
significantly bat that total with 16 teams of
golfers, including Gary Alliss – one of the
country’s leading teaching professionals –
taking part. “We have more than doubled the
number of teams and have more people coming to
the black-tie presentation dinner in the evening
this year so I am confident we will beat last
year’s excellent total,” said Suzanne. Suzanne
has been taking golf lessons with Gary Alliss,
the head pro at The Belfry, since February and
is already reaping the rewards of tuition under
the son of legendary golf commentator Peter
Alliss. “I did not have a handicap when I
started but am now off 36 and, under Gary’s
expert tuition, I have increased my yardages by
20-30 yards with every club,” she said. “Gary
has done a lot to improve my game and it is
great to have him involved in the charity day
again this year. He is so easy to talk to and
relaxing. He treats everyone as an individual
and not as a professional.” Children in Need
is very close to Suzanne’s heart and she is
happy to be able to combine two passions in
order to raise money for a very worthwhile
cause. “Although I do not have kids of my own,
I love children and my parents have been
involved in charity work for many years,” she
added. “I have dealt with children’s charities
before and just like to give something back to
children.”
Pudsey Bear will be out on the course at
Windmill Village, in Allesley, on Friday where
the four-ball teams will battle it out for top
honours. Suzanne has been delighted with the
number of sponsors who have stepped in to
provide prizes including a BMW Series One car as
the hole-in-one prize on the second hole!
Sytner BMW in Birmingham donated the car while
insurance company Johnston Park McAndrew and
Barclays Bank, who have also entered teams into
the tournament, have donated other prizes such
as a holiday in Portugal, a weekend’s golf break
at The Belfry and a set of TaylorMade clubs.
“We have received fantastic support from so many
organisations including Liaison Design and Print
and ASAP Printing,” said Suzanne. For more
